Hi.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope you find something that resonates with you. Have great day!

Top of the morning TO YOU!

Top of the morning TO YOU!

My husband is a morning person. He opens his eyes WITHOUT AN ALARM at 5:30 each morning. Truly disturbing. I am not a morning person. At all. However, we are both breakfast people.

While we spend weekday mornings in various stages of readiness (him) or sleepiness (me), weekend mornings are something we cherish spending together. Last weekend – in the middle of breakfast – I realized how much these traditions mean to me.

I’ve been in a funk the past few weeks, and as my Oura ring likes to remind me, even a little movement does a lot for our mental and physical health! On Friday, I told Trevor I needed a fun, busy day on Saturday just to get me moving in the right direction.

Of course, that started with breakfast. I firmly believe that a good day starts with a good breakfast. Our weekend breakfasts feel like a bit of luxury that has the power to put the day on the right path, even when the only plans we have for the remainder of the day are house projects.

While these experiences and bites have the halo of positive past experiences, they are legitimately delicious. My humble suggestions are below if you’re looking for a little weekend pick-me-up breakfast.

Overland Park Farmers’ Market

As a bougie suburban wife, I love an OPFM Saturday. We have various options in the rotation, so we usually decide based on specials and if we’re feeling sweet or savory.

Veloute, a French caterer and (soon-to-be) market rotates filled or topped beignets. Fillings are based on seasonally available ingredients, and the topped beignets, when available, have biscuit and gravy vibes with a runny egg. Hell. Yes.

Happy Tummy is fresh frying empanadas with several filling options. Still, as a breakie girlie, the bacon and egg is my go-to order. Happy Tummy pops up at breweries on weekend afternoons and evenings, so if you aren’t a morning person but love fried, filled dough, follow them to keep up with them.

I’m also a saucy girl; Happy Tummy’s is an excellent herby counterpoint to fried, cheesy, eggy goodness, buuuuttttttttt if you need to pick up a condiment for the fridge and you like some heat, the Taco Stand sauce from (James! Beard! Award! Winning!) Yoli Tortilla is our new obsession. I could write an essay extolling the glory that is Yoli, but that is another conversation for another day.

A few new additions to our OPFM weekends include Fika Coffee’s cardamom or vanilla lattes. There is just something about seeing real vanilla in your latte that is cozy and extra gratifying.

Luca Jersey-style bagels have become a big part of my solo Wednesday Farmers’ Market routine. They have many chewy, delicious options for your grab-and-go dining pleasure. Semi-Pro Tip: the line gets LONG, so preorder online. A salt bagel with scallion cream cheese is my standard order. However, I'm switching my allegiance the second they offer an egg bagel.

Finally, while technically outside the Market, Kate Smith Soiree is a gorgeous addition to downtown Overland Park. Again, as a predominantly savory girl, I go for the sausage egg and cheese kolache, but their pastries are decadent and delicious. If you want your sweet treat for later, grab some macaron to go.

The Market at Meadowbrook

Not a Farmers’ Market, but The Market is a whole vibe that can be a morning ~destination~ for couples and families alike. Nestled in Meadowbrook Park, breakfast could easily be followed up with a walk or a trip to the playground to let little humans run out their muffin-fueled energy.

We go for one reason and one reason only, the chia pudding. The pudding is topped with a smattering of fresh fruit, which I choose to believe makes it an immaculate health food. It gets its tropical flavor from  Coco Lopez, creamy, coconutty perfection. She’s also just a pretty girl begging to be Instagrammed. We each snag a pudding and split a breakfast burrito or “hand pie,” aka trademarked breakfast pastry. Sharing a bigger item and having our own parfaits is the perfect amount.

Cafe Corazon

By now, we have established that I need coffee to start my day and that an egg situation improves my overall mood. Enter Cafe Corazon, a Latino & Indigenous-owned spot that roasts fair trade coffee from Latin America and supports local and indigenous vendors. Cafe Corazon feels good across the board as I lean more into supporting businesses that align with my values.

Their breakfast empanada is a flakier, thinner dough than Happy Tummy’s. It’s a smaller bite but just as tasty. They have a solid rotation of seasonal special drinks. Still, the horchata and atole lattes hit the spot whenever I order them. Semi-Pro Tip: If they have Chamoy Boy candy on the shelf, grab some! My favorite are the peach rings but the Sour Patch Kids are aces too.

Blackhole Bakery

You really can’t go wrong with anything from Blackhole.

Full stop.

But their mochi donut holes have a special place in my heart. They rotate flavors monthly, except for The Blackhole, which has a permanent roster spot. Mochi is made with glutinous rice, which makes them springier and chewier than a typical donut.

We love Blackhole’s mochi so much that we had them at our wedding reception. There were maybe three left at the end of the night. Get there early because there will be a line and they will sell out.

If you’ve read this far, I appreciate you. I hope you appreciate the Seinfeld reference in the title. Happy breakfasting!
